As expected, players take turns summoning all manner of creatures to attack opponents and enemies or defend from incoming attacks, use trap cards to use spells during the opponent’s turn, and magic cards to use spells in yours. Dueling with opponents is easy and very faithful to the trading card game, as it presents a version of the experience that feels just like playing the real thing. Legacy of the Duelist forgoes all the gameplay fluff and concentrates solely on the dueling, which is fantastic. Still, it’s fun stuff, and the game does a great job at summarizing all the significant story events.

While fans of the series and younger players will appreciate the recaps of the five series, regular players will mostly see them as silly plots that feature young kids and adults fighting with card games. Plot-wise, the stories in Legacy of the Duelist are your typical anime plots, with a small hero learning and improving challenge after challenge, set against the backdrop of a trading card game that’s larger than life. The game follows his and his friends’ exploits as he masters the game, and later other heroes who participated in their own battles as well. It starts off with the original storyline, with Yugi Moto, who unbeknownst to him, is possessed by an ancient Egyptian pharaoh who is a master at Duel Monsters, a popular card game that is based on ancient sorcerer battles. Eventually I did move on from the card game and the TV show, leaving after the first couple of expansions and right around the time Yugi and team fought against Marik, but since then, the series has moved on, focusing on new characters, themes and enemies, going through four more series. I also played the trading card game fervently with friends in between classes, going so far to participate in a local tournament or two to test out my deck building skills.
Don’t get me wrong, there are some 3D animations for the more popular cards as the Blue-Eyes White Dragon or the Dark Magician, but I was really hoping for more.I remember being part of the Yu-Gi-Oh! craze back in the early 00’s, watching Yugi Moto’s adventures with Joey Wheeler and crew as they participated in bad guy Pegasus’ Duel Monsters tournament in what was then part of the Kids’ WB Saturday morning cartoon block. And lastly, for a game released in 2019, the lack of fully animated 3D characters for more monster cards is really disappointing. The portraits given for each character in every chapter are only made up of one image meaning there isn’t quite as much personality to the characters as there could be. The music is somewhat bland and doesn’t quite live up to the fantastic rhythmic scores we’ve seen in the anime and other games before. When purchasing cards in the card shop, there isn’t a way to en masse purchase multiple packs which leaves you pressing A until you’ve hit your max. Now as much as I loved the game, there were a few gripes I had, which didn’t really deter me from my enjoyment with playing matches. Here’s where the DP comes in cause both of these matches will cost 2000 DP to play through. Playing through a Sealed match, your deck will be made instantly from ten 5 card battle packs, making it all a lucky draw while Draft matches involve drafting 45 cards into a deck after three rounds of pack opening which gives you more customization. You can also play through a Sealed or Draft play mode.
